Sewer systems are one of those things that, when they demand attention, the timing is rarely convenient — and the consequences can be costly. 

Homeowners are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the sewer lines up to the point where they connect to the city sewer connection.  Cracks, improperly sealed joints, or older/deteriorated pipes can result in root growth within the pipe.  Low spots and rough areas in the pipe can lead to debris buildup.  Either of these conditions can restrict or block the flow of sewage to the city sewer, resulting in flooding within the home.  Repair or replacement of the main sewer line involves excavating the pipe and sometimes the street, and costs can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.
